Line manager guide

'Sponsored by EY'

This guide makes it easier for you to recognise and realise the potential of disabled people who work for you. It will help you to:

  • Set targets, goals and objectives and decide when it may be reasonable to adjust these for disabled employees.
  • Give positive and negative feedback to employees about their performance and how to implement performance improvement plans.
  • Identify the impact of a disability/ impairment or long-term condition on the behaviour of an employee and what this may mean for the team as a whole.
  • Adjust disciplinary, capability, performance management and grievance processes for the needs of disabled people or those with health conditions where appropriate.
  • Manage the needs and expectations of your whole team including non-disabled employees.
  • Make sure you do not break the law.
  • Know where to go for more help and advice.
  • Realise the potential of everyone who works.

This guide is for line managers – that’s anyone who has direct managerial responsibility for one person, a team or a department.
